Adventure Rox Day Camp Programs

Adventure Rox Day Camps have been providing children & youth with top-notch instruction in adventure based programs since 2004. Our goal is to expose campers to a variety of activities in a safe and structured environment and to encourage them to try new things and expand their skill base. Campers receive instruction in various activities which are designed to allow individuals to learn at their own rate while being part of a team environment.

Activities Include:

Rock climbing with Adventure Rox Day Camps! (click to enlarge it) Rock Climbing Lessons: Campers begin the week on our 30’ rock climbing wall learning basic climbing techniques, proper equipment use, knot tying, and belay skills. Two additional lessons on the rock climbing wall will prepare them for Friday, which is spent rock climbing on real rock at a location near Whitehorse.

Zip Line: A big hit at the Equinox Outdoor Climbing Wall is a 1000 foot 'zip line' which takes a rider from a platform at the top of the wall, to a landing area on the other side of the pond. During the rock climbing lessons, campers will set personal goals and may want to challenge themselves further by zooming down the zip line! It's a fun, exhilarating and safe ride that campers won't want to miss.

Canoeing: Following guidelines set by the Canadian Recreational Canoeing Association, campers will learn and improve their tandem flat water paddling skills by playing various canoeing games and activities on the Takhini Hot Springs pond. The following day, the campers will learn moving water techniques and safe boating practices as they build catamaran style rafts and spend the day paddling the Yukon River (see details below).

Fun on the Yukon River with Adventure Rox Day Camps! (click to enlarge it) Yukon River Day Trip: A highlight of the week is when campers build catamaran style rafts at a put in on the Yukon River by MacRae. A leisurely paddle is enjoyed by all to Schwatka Lake. Along the way campers will play games, learn some map & compass skills, identify birds and animals they see, and have a picnic lunch at a site along the way.

Outdoor Adventure: Campers will spend an afternoon learning some outdoor living and survival skills. They will learn how to build a safe campfire and then put their skills to good use by cooking up some delicious treats! They will then head into the forest for activities such as orienteering, shelter building, hiking and forest games.

Kayaking: Campers will take part in an afternoon kayaking lesson designed to be a fun introduction for novices and a chance for more experienced paddlers to work on their skills. Campers will learn to paddle in a straight line (not as easy as it sounds) reverse, turn round, stop and get out in a hurry. Kayaking games will be part of the fun.

Specialty Weeks There are a few weeks during the summer that include a special component unique to that week.

  • Horseback Riding: During sessions 1,5 and 9 we will be offering our popular Climb’n’Ride Camp for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders. These three weeks will include all of our regular activities with the exception of one rock climbing lesson and the afternoon Outdoor Adventure program. Instead, campers will take part in a full day horseback riding lesson provided by Spirited Adventures Ltd. Jackie Dickson, owner / instructor, is a licensed Equine Canada Coach with a certificate in Equine Studies from the Saskatchewan Institute of Science and Technology as well as a masters degree specializing in leadership. Jackie offers a highly structured program that provides excellent training for those just learning to ride, while teaching the finer points of equitation and horsemanship to the experienced rider. All students learn how to behave and stay safe around horses. In 2010 Jackie started helping campers work towards recognized certifications with the Canadian Equestrian Federation (CEF). We will continue to do this in 2011. Beginner riders will work towards their Little Wrangler Level 1 or 2, while more experienced riders will aim for their CEF Level 1 award. The price for “Climb’n’Ride” weeks is $365.
  • Additional Kayaking: During session 2 & 4 we will be offering Climb’n’Paddle Camp for campers who want to spend more time on the water in a kayak. This week will include all of our regular activities with the exception the river trip on Tuesday. Instead the group will spend the day at Chadburn Lake enjoying a flat water kayaking lesson, a picnic lunch, active games and some time to fish. The kayaking lesson is designed to be a fun introduction for novices, and a chance for more experienced paddlers to work on their skills. Please have camper bring a fishing rod to camp on Tuesday if they have one. The price for this week is the same as regular weeks.

Other Activities at Camp: Depending on the interests of the campers each week, other activities we may offer at Adventure Rox Day Camp include: a guided tour of the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, arts & craft projects during breaks, swimming in the Takhini Hot Springs, and many fun camp games played throughout the week.

We make sure that each session is slightly different to ensure variety for campers returning for more than one week. We guarantee that every week will be a safe, busy and a fun filled experience with the opportunity for campers to learn new skills in a variety of outdoor adventure programs.

Statutory Holidays:

Canada Day (Friday, July 1st) and Discovery Day (Monday, August 15th) fall during sessions 2 & 9. We will run our programs as usual during these two weeks so that all campers are able to enjoy the complete Adventure Rox Camp experience.
