Staying Warm While Ice Climbing

Ice Climbing in the Yukon Cutoff temperature for the ice climbing wall is generally -20°c

Layers! Layers! Layers!

  • Base Layer - next to skin, long underwear top and bottom
  • Mid Layer - insulation, wool or synthetic sweater
  • Outer Layer - wind protection, shell jacket i.e. nylon, gortex, etc.
  • Head - very warm hat!!!!! you lose most of your heat through your head
  • Hands - light gloves for climbing and belaying, overmitts for between climbs
  • Feet - Thick wool or synthetic socks
  • Down Jacket / Parka for between climbs

We have a burn barrel to help keep you warm too.

Top 10 ways to be warm:

  1. Start the day with a ‘Truckers Special’ breakfast ~ high fat content i.e. add butter to your oatmeal.
  2. Layers! Layers! Layers!
  3. Keep the warmth in by adding layers before you start to feel cold
  4. Bring a thermos of something hot (my favorite is earl grey tea with gatoraid)
  5. Bring hand warmers or hot water bottles
  6. Eat chocolate (high sugar and fat content)
  7. Over-dress with a puffy down jacket and warm hat; the extra core heat will help to keep hands and feet warm
  8. Keep moving
  9. Sing an action song, play an action game
  10. Think about warm places like Tahiti and the Hot Springs pool!
