March Break Winter Adventure Camp
Adventure Rox Day Camps have been providing children & youth with top-notch instruction in adventure based programs since 2004. Our goal is to expose campers to a variety of activities in a safe and structured environment and to encourage them to try new things and expand their skill base. All activities are designed to allow individuals to learn at their own rate while being part of a team environment. Campers have the opportunity to focus on skill development while working on increasing self awareness and confidence, learning new leadership skills, setting individual goals, working as a team, and working on problem solving and communication skills.
Adventure activities include:
Ice Climbing: Campers will receive 4 ice climbing lessons during their week at camp. We begin the week getting ‘geared’ up for ice climbing by having an introduction
to ice climbing safety and skills. Instruction will focus on equipment use, tying climbing knots, belaying skills and general safety practices. Camper’s first exposure to
this unique winter sport will be going on an ‘ice hike’. Using crampons and safety equipment they will follow their instructors along an ice path of traverses, bridges and tunnels to the top of the towers. As the week progresses, campers will take part in additional, more in-depth lessons where they will learn to use ice axes and rope to climb the ice towers.
Snowshoeing: We will spend an afternoon at the Takhini Hot Springs learning about snowshoeing. Using games and activities, campers will learn how to walk, run, climb, and descend hills while wearing snowshoes. Once everyone has mastered these skills, the group will then participate in our “GPTeaming Course”. This exciting program utilizes GPS technology (electronic navigating tool) to create a new twist on teambuilding. Campers use GPS units to locate mystery caches located around the Takhini Hot Springs. These caches contain a variety of rewards, puzzles, and problem solving activities.
Ice Fishing: We will head out for an afternoon ice fishing excursion earlier in the week. Campers will have the chance to make their own jigging rod prior to our outing and then put it to the test on a lake just outside of city limits. We will spend the afternoon enjoying ice fishing and learning some campfire cooking skills around an open fire. Snacks provided.
Quinzee Building & Atlatl: Campers will learn how to build their own quinzee shelter and experience Atlatl throwing. (At-La-Tle) is a traditional spear throwing system found in most primitive societies around the world. It is the precursor technology that led to the development of the bow and arrow. Today, after thousands of years of obscurity, it is enjoying a renaissance as a popular hobby and is rapidly becoming an international sport. Campers will make their own Atlatl throwing boards and then participate in our famous Atlatl golf.
Dog Sledding: Later in the week we will head off to Muktuk Adventures for an afternoon of dog sledding. Campers in our summer leadership program had the opportunity to meet the dogs at Muktuk Kennels during their overnight camping trip - now winter campers will be able to go dog sledding with them. Owner/operator, Frank Turner has spent three decades mushing in the Yukon, and has extensive knowledge of the territory and dog-sledding. Muktuk is known for the great care and love they give their dogs - over 100 amazing, friendly huskies, many of which descend from their Yukon Quest champion team. Campers will have an orientation to the dogs, equipment and art of driving a dog team. They will learn about putting on dog harnesses and booties, how to brake, how to balance and steer the sled, and other basics of driving a sled-dog team. They will then go on a guided run with their own team.
Equinox Rock Climbing Wall & Zipline: We end the week with a day at the Takhini Hot Springs. The morning will be spent climbing our 30 foot high rock climbing wall and going on the 1000 foot 'zip line', which takes a rider from a platform at the top of the wall, to a landing area on the other side of the pond. During the rock climbing lessons, campers will set personal goals and may want to challenge themselves further by zooming down the zip line! It's a fun, exhilarating and safe ride that campers won't want to miss.
Campfire Cookout & Hot Springs Soak: In the afternoon campers will enjoy having a campfire cookout (lunch provided) and enjoying a soak in the Takhini Hot Springs.
Closing Exercise: Later in the afternoon campers will have the opportunity to reflect on their week - the skills they gained, the goals they accomplished and challenges they overcame. The group will take part in a few debriefing activities and say farewell to the friends they shared the week with.
Statutory Holiday Note: Session 2 is a four day camp week due to Good Friday. The fee for this week is reduced to $250. Campers will only have 3 ice climbing lessons and will not have a chance to participate in the Quinzee Building and Atlatl Program. All other programs remain the same.
